Yes...yes
I know. What happened with the last issue?! Look, it'd be too
lengthy to get into it now, but, suffice it to say, we're giving a real
tasty review in this issue. Insha'llah, we'll be more consistent in the future.
With that aside, let's get to the food! |

Our first stop is one of the restaurants that I can count on for giving me
a great meal at very fair prices. The Mustang Cafe has been open for
little more than a year. Its specialty of traditional Afghani
cuisine. I say specialty because you can also order American staples
such as hamburgers, French fries, chicken cutlets, etc. It is this variety that enables the Mustang Cafe to cater to families, especially. "Not all children like Afghani food," explained part owner Ehsan. "We want to offer families a choice when they come her." And it seems to be working. A local school brings in hungry teenagers after a hard day of school. Moreover, the restaurant itself is expanding. Br. Eshan stated that the new facilities will be able to hold close to 250 people! This, obviously, opens the door for some serious catering and party potential. |

Our meal consisted of a lovely, light salad with an especially tasty house
dressing. The main courses consisted of a combination platter which
included beef and chicken pieces, three types of rice, a fried pepper and
tomato. To garnish the dish, a beautifully carved tomato, in the
shape of a rose, was placed on the top. For some people, Afghani cooked meat is sometimes rather dry. This is not the case with Mustang's cooking. The chicken was incredibly juicy with the right amount of spices. The beef almost felt as if it melted in your mouth. What was great about this combination platter was that both meats had a distinct taste, thereby allowing you to savor different flavors. The same can be said for the rice. The white, brown and green rice all complemented each other. The brown rice was garnished with sweet shredded carrots and raisins while the green rice was made using a variety of well balanced vegetables. |

My brother-in-law's meal was similar to mine except that he had ordered
the falafel platter. His verdict? "The best falafel dish
I've ever eaten." Enough said. While we were eating, I noticed that a handful of young men came in and ordered hamburgers and chicken sandwiches. At another table, older brothers were partaking in the Afghani dishes. Alhumdulillah, it was great seeing brothers from different generations eating in a Muslim owned restaurant. What was even better were the non-Muslims who were eating at the front of the restaurant. What brought us together was the wonderful food and environment that can be found at the Mustang Cafe. |
